Three heating types are common in Wake County:
Heat pumps are the most prevalent in newer homes. They handle both heating and cooling from the same system, which works well in North Carolina's climate — most winters are mild enough that heat pumps run efficiently without heavy use of backup electric resistance heat.
Gas furnaces are common in older neighborhoods with natural gas service and in some newer construction. Gas furnaces produce warmer air at the register than heat pumps and recover quickly from large setpoints. The operating cost depends heavily on gas prices and efficiency rating.
Electric furnaces (heating strips in an air handler) are found in homes without gas service. They are reliable but expensive to operate in cold weather. Replacing an electric furnace with a heat pump is typically a cost-effective upgrade.
Heat pump heating: Fall inspection should include checking the defrost cycle, verifying refrigerant charge, and testing backup heat elements. A heat pump that fails to defrost properly ices up the outdoor unit in cold weather.
Gas furnace: Annual inspection covers heat exchanger condition, burner operation, ignition system, flue draft, and gas pressure. Heat exchanger cracks are a safety concern — CO production is possible from a cracked exchanger.
Electric furnace: Element testing, sequencer and limit switch inspection. Generally requires less maintenance than gas systems.
