Why Air Quality Matters in Raleigh's Climate

Raleigh's combination of high summer humidity, significant spring pollen, and mixed housing types creates a range of indoor air quality situations. The same HVAC system that controls temperature also influences humidity levels, filters particulates, and — in homes with ventilation equipment — manages the exchange of indoor and outdoor air.

Understanding how the HVAC system affects air quality helps homeowners make better decisions about filtration, humidity control, and when air quality concerns warrant a professional assessment.


Humidity Control

The target indoor relative humidity range for comfort and health is 35–55%. Below 35% in winter, occupants notice dry air effects — static electricity, dry skin, increased susceptibility to airborne viruses. Above 55% in summer, mold growth risk increases, and the home feels warmer than the temperature indicates.

In Raleigh, the summer challenge is excess humidity. A properly sized and operating air conditioning system dehumidifies as a byproduct of cooling. Systems that short-cycle (because they are oversized) or that have refrigerant issues may not dehumidify adequately. If the indoor humidity consistently runs above 55% when the AC is operating, diagnosis is warranted.

In winter, the challenge is sometimes excess dryness in homes with gas heat. Whole-house humidifiers connected to the HVAC system can address this; portable humidifiers are an alternative.


Filtration

HVAC filters trap particulates — dust, pollen, pet dander, mold spores. The MERV rating indicates filter efficiency. Most residential systems use MERV 6–11 filters. Higher-MERV filters trap more particles but restrict airflow more. A MERV 13 filter provides good filtration but requires a system with adequate blower capacity.

Raleigh's spring pollen season — March through May — is a period when filtration matters most for allergy sufferers. Changing to a fresh filter at the beginning of pollen season and again at the end improves system performance during peak periods.

The City of Raleigh monitors outdoor air quality through the city's environmental services. The Greater Raleigh Chamber represents businesses, including those in the IAQ service space, that operate in the Raleigh area. Raleigh Parks and Recreation manages greenways and outdoor spaces that connect to indoor air quality concerns during high-pollen periods. Ventilation

Tightly built homes — common in construction from the 2000s forward — may have inadequate natural air exchange. ERVs (energy recovery ventilators) and HRVs (heat recovery ventilators) provide controlled fresh air exchange while minimizing energy loss. If a newer home has persistent VOC concerns, high CO2 levels, or persistent humidity issues despite a functioning HVAC system, ventilation assessment is the next step.
